Secrid Featured In BBC Series ‘Common Good’

A series produced by B Lab Global in collaboration with BBC StoryWorks

The Hague, 20 May 2025 – Secrid—the Dutch pocketwear brand known for its innovative Cardprotector—offers a behind-the-scenes look at its partnership with sheltered workshops in the new online series ‘Common Good’. This documentary series showcases how companies around the globe are contributing to a better world by placing social and environmental impact, transparency, and accountability at the heart of their mission. Produced by BBC StoryWorks in collaboration with B Lab Global, the organisation behind the international B Corp certification, ‘Common Good’ can be viewed worldwide online via BBC.com.

The new series visits the businesses and enterprises – including Secrid – that are actively working on solutions to societal challenges, demonstrating that things can be done differently.

“At a time when our world faces unprecedented challenges, B Corps prove that profit and purpose aren't opposing forces, but rather complementary elements of truly successful business,” says Sarah Schwimmer, Co-Lead Executive of B Lab Global. "Common Good showcases the real human stories behind the B Corp movement and demonstrates that business can indeed be a powerful force for positive change. Secrid’s partnership with sheltered workshops is a great example of this.”

Design as a Force for Good

Secrid’s story in ‘Common Good’ focuses on the unique collaboration with sheltered workshops, told from a design perspective. For 15 years, Secrid has been creating jobs for people who are distanced from the labour market by working with these Dutch workshops in Leiden, Cruquius, and Delft to assemble their cardholders. By (re)designing the production process and products together with these teams, solutions are developed that enhance both the workability and the product quality of its designs. Examples include simplifying product designs, developing ergonomic tools, and intuitive machines, enabling employees to perform their work optimally. At the same time, this allows Secrid to produce locally in the Netherlands—a win-win for both business and society.

“We want to show that designers have the power to change the world. By developing our products and processes together with social workplaces, we prove that design is not just about form and function, but also about creating opportunities and value for both business and society. We are extremely proud that BBC StoryWorks and B Lab Global are shining a spotlight on our way of working, and we hope that companies and designers feel inspired,” says René van Geer, industrial designer and founder of Secrid.

    Follow-up to #Valuing Capabilities campaign

Secrid’s participation in the BBC StoryWorks series is a logical follow-up to the #ValuingCapabilities campaign, which the company launched last year on Labour Day (1 May). With this campaign, Secrid called on the manufacturing industry to collaborate more with social development companies, thus giving people distanced from the labour market a chance. In the UK, there are still more than 4,000,000 people with a work-limiting disability without employment (The Health Foundation, health.org.uk), while companies in manufacturing are facing staff shortages. Secrid and the national sector organisation Cedris jointly developed a whitepaper with concrete steps for inclusive collaboration in the industry.

    B Corp and Mission-Driven Entrepreneurship

Secrid has been B Corp certified since 2022 and strives for a positive impact on people, the environment, and society. The company consciously opts for local, CO2-compensated production and donates 1% of its turnover to designers and projects that contribute to their design-driven mission: driving the ‘Industrial Evolution’—an industry that produces ‘better’ rather than ‘more’.

    Launch

The episode as part of the ‘Common Good’ series can be viewed worldwide from today via BBC.com and YouTube, and will reach millions of viewers through an international campaign. With this participation, Secrid underscores its conviction that design and collaboration are key to an inclusive and sustainable future.
